The above diagram was made from a small horizontal section of the same picture: a maximum colour saturation shows how the chromatic range of my iris
contains potentially all the colours of Earth's Nature, from the blue of skies and waters to the green of plants, until the brown of the Earth itself.
My right eye (scanned alive in 2000)
All of the intermediate tones from the amber crown around the pupil to the circumference vary and seem to change depending on (wheater/light/environment or
mental?)
conditions, with shades more green or more bluish and sometimes creating the illusion of a grey whole -- which doesn't seem to be there at all, in any pictures!
Whereas Heterochromia (also known as a heterochromia iridis or heterochromia iridum) is an eye condition in which one iris is a different color from the other (complete heterochromia), Central Heterochromia is an eye condition in which there are two different colors in the same iris. Central Heterochromia is where the central (pupillary) zone of the iris is a different color than the mid-peripheral (ciliary) zone.
Eye color is determined primarily by the concentration and distribution of melanin pigment within the iris tissues, anything affecting those factors may result in a difference of color being observed.[...]
The human iris can be seen in a number of various colors. There are three true colors in the eyes that determine the outward appearance; brown, yellow, and grey. How much of each color an individual has determines the appearance of his or her eye color.[...]
Eyes displaying Central Heterochromia are often referred to as "cat eyes" because of the appearance of a multi-colored iris. Central Heterochromia appears to be prevalent in irides containing low amounts of melanin.[...] Central Heterochromia does not label an eye as hazel. This is because the outer ring of an eye affected by Central Heterochromia is that iris's true color.
Article about HAZEL eyes (classification of color) from Wikipedia:
Hazel eyes are due to a combination of a Rayleigh scattering and a more than moderate amount of melanin in the iris' anterior border layer.[...] Hazel eyes often appear to shift in color from a light brown to a medium golden-dark green. A number of studies using three-point scales have assigned "hazel" to be the medium-color between the lightest shade of blue and darkest shade of brown.[...] This can sometimes produce a multicolored iris, i.e., an eye that is light brown near the pupil and charcoal or amber/dark green on the outer part of the iris (and vice versa) when observed in sunlight. Hazel is commonly found in Europe, some regions of the Middle East, North America, parts of Central Asia and parts of South Asia.
Definitions of the eye color "hazel" vary: it is sometimes considered to be synonymous with light-brown and gold.[...]
In North America, "hazel" is often used to describe eyes that appear to change color.
Here on Urban Dictionary you can find an interesting definition of "hazel eyes ": "Otherwise known as "mood eyes"
FAQs? DIAGNOSTICS !
From the Google diagnostic (one of the webmaster tools) information on this site, I see that most of the visitors are from the U.S. and U.K., mostly looking for the eye color of "celebs", or info about ChC in general; here are some of the questions appearing in the search engines box that I feel I can suggest quick answers:
Is central heterochromia bad and/or Can heterochromia kill ?
Most certainly, NO; ChC could kill someone else for its excessive coolness, but the owner -or carrier- is relatively as safe as any other earthling=). Despite the ambiguity of the English noun (used also on Wikipedia) related to a part of the human body, in this case the meaning of "condition" is "a mode or state of being" rather than "a disease or physical ailment". Even though we've got evidence of modifications or "evolution" of Chc in time -See the Robert G. Case below- Central HeteroChromia is very likely here to stay, as a "mode or state of being"; and to think that this "additional beauty" is a disease, is pure madness! (or is it addictional beauty?)
Hazel eyes crazy eyes?
This reminds me a line from the lyrics of the beautiful song I would for you by Perry Farrell (#1 in the photo gallery): "You say my eyes / are crazy eyes"...
As you can see in this gallery, from the most extravagant leader of Jane's Addiction on, there's a lot of "creative" or "artistic" Central-HeteroChromatic people around; actors, movie directors, comedians, supermodels, singers... My personal suggestion is to forget about the "crazy" thing, which could actually affect all of them -and us- and to look at the good one: they're all famous and rich... So, let's concentrate on that point, shall we?
Central heterochromia and Clozapine?
Don't know who googled this out, but I imagine it was one who noticed a change of some degree in his/her eye's color while under that kind of treatment; now, i know for sure (by personal experience) that some kind of the so-called "antipsychotic" drugs can actually modify the color of the iris (i.e. causing central-heterochromia) along with everything else -or the "invisible" part of the "soul" (psykhē)- behind it. This could actually be the proof that "eyes are the mirror of the soul"... I couldn't be more specific about the drug responsible of causing such effect, but it surely belongs to the category of Clozapine and, as far as I know, this non-undesired effect will cease with the consumption of it. Again, by personal experience I can assure you that in the end that peculiar, short-term, yet unique non-undesired effect is the only one in the scale of positivity ; so think about it, drug users.

Still from the Italian TV show Top Secret about UFOs. Maybe there's a reason for putting this peculiar image
between E.T.s and flying saucers.... And maybe not.
Anyway, our eye comes back later during the show, in this full-screen macro:
When I decided to change the title of this site I already knew the star of 1978 "fashion thriller" Eyes of Laura Mars, Faye Dunaway, was central-heterochromatic, and yet I wasn't able to find a good picture of her eye; today, when I have finally found this one, the actress is about 70 y.o. and has been like ...restored up to the point of "madamism". Luckily enough, they (still) haven't changed her eyeballs, as we can see here.

This self-portrait with a ladybug, from the young photographer of promise Gordon McBride, a.k.a.=P0RG on DeviantArt shows the eyes colouring that he tells us caused by the effects of the Sunlight on his iris, which is usually brown... Strange, but valuable effect!
A 3DBeing here on YouTube shows how his eyes do not become lizard-like even when he's thinking about "lizerd" stuff... Could we accept this as evidence of his humanity? Of course, we like the round pupil when surrounded by those familiar colours.

A TYPICAL CASE: KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS
Green?

Grey, or what?
English/French actress Kristin Scott Thomas seems to have a lovely pair of eyes for every occasion; in fact they change, but they don't need any intervention by the owner.

The famous cover photograph of the June 1985 issue of National Geographic was of an Afghan refugee, a beautiful young girl with hauntingly green eyes. The photograph was taken at the Nasir Bagh refugee camp in 1984 by photographer Steve McCurry. The girl was one of the students in an informal school within the refugee camp; McCurry, rarely given the opportunity to photograph Afghan women, seized the opportunity and captured her image. She was approximately 12 years old at the time.
Although her name was not known, her picture, titled "Afghan Girl," appeared on the June 1985 cover of National Geographic. The image of her face, with a red scarf draped loosely over her head and with her piercing sea-green eyes staring directly into the camera, became a symbol both of the 1980s Afghan conflict and of the refugee situation worldwide. The image itself was named as "the most recognized photograph" in the history of the magazine.

ANOTHER TYPICAL CASE: THE TARSIER
Tarsiers are haplorrhine primates of the genus Tarsius, a genus in the family Tarsiidae, which is itself the lone extant family within the infraorder Tarsiiformes.
Although the group was once more widespread, all the species living today are found in the islands of Southeast Asia. (Wikipedia)
Searching for "tarsier" on Google Images, you'll find mostly eterochromatic tarsiers like this one on Wordpress:

MY EVOLVING IRIS
by Robert G. from Ohio, USA
"I first noticed my changing eyes when I was in 8th grade and I was helping my parents purchase a new laptop and I had the responsibility of making sure all the digital family photos were saved onto a flash drive and I was looking at a close up of me in about the first grade, then the next photo was one in 6th grade of me and my friends and I think we might have been in front of a window when it was taken because my eyes were lit up by sunlight and i noticed that it looked like i had a blurry aqua color blotch on my left eye and i turned back to the kindergarten photo and to my surprise it wasn't there!
So I went to the mirror and checked it out and nearly the whole outside of both my eyes was that aqua color!
Later I also started noticing that there were these light brown, almost yellow "veins" coming from the brown inner circle which made me really think that my eyes were really changing color!"
Here's the "evolution" of Robert's irises from his childhood on:
Here's Robert's eye NOW :
Thank you for sharing your story!
THANKS TO JAMES!

TRIPLE X: HERE COMES JEAN!
This is the third central-heterochromatic X-guy I've spotted in the X-men movies... so far.
After actors Patrick Stewart (Prof. Xavier) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) here's Famke Janssen (Jean Grey)
So now, let's check out Cycl... hey, no, wait a sec...
This is Fammke's eye again, in a still image from the 1995 movie Lord of Illusions
TV and movie actress Katie Holmes
This gentleman is Michael Palin and he's the third member of the famous British group Monty Python - after Terry Gilliam and John Cleese - to be recognized as central-heterochromatic...
Who'll be next?*
Rachel Weisz, actress
Paz de la Huerta
Watching "A Single Man" by Tom Ford I happened to notice actress Julianne Moore's ChC, in this distorted close up of his eye...
...And the protagonist too, 2011 Academy-Awarded Colin Firth; a great actor indeed
*) Terry Jones!
I must admit I already knew the answer, when I wrote the question about the "next Python" above, since I caught Mr. Jones' peculiar (brown/water) CHC in some of the MP shows and/or movies some time ago.
Since it seems I can't google out a bigger close-up of his eye, here are three medium-size pics of them... Hope it will suffice=)
So then, 4 out of 6 Monty Python guys were central-heterochromatic... Does this suggest anything, apart from a good idea for a banner for this site?
Unchangeable
Isabella
Thanks to the case of Robert G., we now know that central-heterochromia may evolve since our first years of age, changing the iris from mono-chromatic to a complete (radial) Rayleigh scattering.
We don't know which color were Isabella Rossellini's eyes when she was a child, but from the beginning of her modeling career in the 80s (on the right=) up to nowadays (left) her eyes haven't changed a bit
TIGER EYED SOPHIA
So that's how they used to call "cat eyes" in 1960... or is "cat eyes" the way they call "tiger eyes" today?...
mmh...
BLUE-EYED JOAQUIN?
I've always thought that Joaquin Phoeinx was quite a special-looking guy, except for his "ordinary" blue eyes...
Finally today I know why he looks so cool to me:
He's another star in our heterochromatic sky!
PAZ!
Still image from the 2002 Italian movie Paz! dedicated to cartoonist Andrea Pazienza
the eye belongs very likely to actor Massimo Taranto:
An interesting sequence from the independent, "weird" 2008 stop-motion animation feature film $9.99 with subtitles:
Of course Lenny is true as much as corny, that's the best part of her body, indeed!
But if you wonder about the
reason of this peculiar choice for his lover's eyes, you may find a clue in this picture of Tatiana Rosenthal:
director of the movie itself.
Watching The Graduate tonight I've discovered that both Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross are central-heterochromatic...
Too bad I couldn't find a good big picture of her on the web, but here's Dustin (now about 70 y.o.)
...
...And while googling for Katharine Ross I happened to find out this picture of a Katharine McPhee; then I discovered she's an "American pop singer, songwriter, actress, model, and television personality"... And -guess what- she's CHC, too!
... I also happened to google out Kay Panabaker ...
...And her sister Danielle. Panabaker, as well. They're both TV and cinema actresses.
Natalie Portman, actress. Her eyes seem to be mostly brown in the movies, so I just didn't consider her until I saw this pic here...
There's a lot of "chosen" people in Hollywood, I'd say about a 90%, so this "celebs" gallery is mostly a "kosher" gallery...
But i guess you already knew that.
This is Val Kilmer; actor.
This is Beyonce Knowles. Singer... I guess.
Bob Hopkins, actor mostly known for Who Framed Roger Rabbit
I didn't know what a Justin Bieber was, until now. It seems to be some sort of a boy to me, but he's quite ChC, too.
The Smiths
Willard Christopher "Will" Smith, Jr. "married actress Jada Pinkett in 1997. Together they have had two children: Jaden Christopher Syre (born 1998),

Mr. "Fresh Prince" doesn't seem to be heterochromatic, but here's his wife:
Jada Pinkett Smith...
and his daughter, Willow Smith.

VAMPIRE LOOKing?
This is the transformation sequence from vampire-killer priest to the uber-vampire named "Black Hat" in 2011 movie Priest by C.S. Stewart:
and this is the final look of the villain's eye:
where we can see the reflection of his chosen victim, along with a central-heterochromatic iris.
But that's just a movie; let's take a look at
the real thing.
This is the villain "Black Hat" played by Kiwi actor Karl (Heinz) Urban, who has already played Bones in Star Trek and Eomer in The Lord of the Rings
........ and here's his almost-victim in the movie, English actress Lily Collins:
Battleship / John Carter
The storyline of "Battleship" from IMDB: "A fleet of ships is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals."
This movie will be released in 2012; in the trailer we hear "dad" Liam Neeson (as the Admiral) saying to his daughter's boyfriend, Canadian actor Taylor Kitsch:
Very likely Liam hasn't seen this still image from another 2012 movie trailer, John Carter, starring the very same Kitsch:
Not a great mystery to us!, is it?
The Apple/CC/B-Ellie Eye
I've found this image on the Google News page today; it comes from webnews.it, and it is licensed under CC (Creative Common share alike):
I discovered that it is based on a photo by "Bellie Flopper" (very likely one Ellie Burton) and even on her own eye, as we can see here on Flickr:
Following (B)ellie's photostream we can find -along with some good shot- that she's quite aware of the beauty of her own eyes, and that her ChC factor comes directly from her mom.
Mark Wahlberg, "american actor"(and former rapper)
José Antonio Domínguez Banderas, better known as Antonio Banderas, is a Spanish film actor, film director, film producer and singer (?)
Lindsay Lohan, "American actress, pop singer and model"
George Clooney, actor, film director, producer, and screenwriter.
Steve Coogan, English comedian, actor, writer and producer.
Kate Hudson, American actress
Julia Roberts ...oh, well now
The Arquettes
An "artistic" family, the Arquettes; sons of two actors, all of the siblings are in the showbiz. From left to right: Alexis, Rosanna, Richmond, Patricia and David
Patricia, actress (Lost highways) and director
(don't know why she's my favourite of the bunch)
Rosanna, actress (Pulp Fiction), film director, and producer
David, actor, film director, producer, screenwriter, fashion designer, and occasional professional wrestler (!?)
(I remember he seemed to be kind of geeky as a cop in Scream)
Dulcis in Fundo, Alexis (born Robert) trans woman, actress, musician, and cabaret performer
THE END
(still looking for a good pic of Richmond Arquette...)
This deserves an anthropological note; as we can see here central heterochromia affects all kinds of people at the bottom of the skies including blacks, jews, cats and...
I know, I know, this is another tarsier, but he's just too cute... (click to enlarge)
RISE OF THE CHC APES
In the 2011 movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes actor James Franco (see above) as Will Rodman explains the effect
of the cure for the Alzheimer disease, injected to the mother of the apes that will eventually rule the Planet (this one):
There have been absolutely no side effects associated with 1-12, with one exception:
for some reason, the chimp's irises exhibit flex of green; actually it was first noticed in chimp 9, hence her nickname
"Bright Eyes"
It's true:
Strangely enough, I happened to notice the occurence of ChC-eyed specimens from various species, including the lovely prosimian tarsier above,
but no "apes" (or non-human primates) at all; in this movie we can see how it would look like:
And this is the sixth case of "artificial central-heterochromatic eyes" in this gallery!
Russell Crowe, Actor: Gladiator. Born in New Zealand, Russell has made his home in Australia since he was a small child ...
You may read the rest on IMDB.
Kyle Chandler, American actor; seen recently in Super 8
Another K.C. is American actor and director Kevin Costner, here showing us the light pattern in his eye
Ellen Page, a young Canadian actress, and another interesting case of central-heterochromia associated with a mild heterophoria
Justin Theroux, actor, cousin of the famous writer and British TV personality Louis Theroux; he starred in both of my favourite Lynch's films "Mulholland Dr." and "INLAND EMPIRE", even though he's not my favourite actor.... Sure he's central-heterochromatic!
Louis Theroux, famous writer, British TV personality and cousin of famous actor Justin Theroux... I think you already know that.
Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen; he was one-eyed both in Casino Royale and Valhalla Rising, but he's got two eyes, and they're both central-heterochromatic!

He is known for his roles in television as Eric Brady in Days of our Lives, which earned him several Daytime Emmy Award nominations, as well as Alec/X5-494 in Dark Angel and Jason Teague in Smallville. Ackles currently stars as Dean Winchester on the CW series Supernatural. (Wikipedia)
Here's a close-up of his eyes: plain, dull, ordinary green eyes
but here's another portrait of Ackles, revealing the reason why he's in this gallery:

PAULA & SPECIAL GUEST: JUNO
[11/07/2011] Hi! I stumbled onto your website about heterochromia today while doing some research. My puppy's left eye is half light brown and half bright blue (I included a picture of it - it looks fake but it's not. I wish I had a better picture, but 12 week old puppies don't stay still very well!) I was wishing I had heterochromia because I think it's beautiful, when I discovered central heterochromia. My eyes have always been three distinct colors: brown around the pupil, green in the middle, and dark gray/blue around the outside. They generally look dark green. I had to shine a very bright flashlight in my eye for the picture I'm attaching.
Sorry for the image quality - I just had my ipod laying around so I used that.
Anyway, thanks, and I love the website!
Thanks to you, Paula from Mississippi!
(and to your lovely friend Juno, too!)
THE SMURFS
"This film represents the first time the Smurfs are depicted with blue eyes" (IMDB) ...and not only blue, as we can see here
IMMORTALLY CENTRAL-HETEROCHROMATIC
This is the eye of Athena,
goddess of "wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, warfare, strength, strategy,
the arts, crafts,
justice, and skil" (Wikipedia) in a still image from the movie Immortals by Tarsem Singh (2011):
Even though the movie is cramped with special FX, this is not the case; the eye belongs to Isabel Lucas, "an Australian actress
and
model perhaps best known for her role as Tasha Andrews on the Australian television soap opera Home and Away (Wikipedia):
Kind of ...divine eyes, aren't they?
12/04/2011: Good News from England - UK:
Hi i’ve just found your website and loved it.
My 15 yo daughter
Chloe
discovered last week that her eyes are central heterochromatic so we looked closer at the rest of the immediate family. My parents have both got this, my father has blue/grey/green and my mother has grey/green. Mine are green/orangey brown. My husband has regular blue eyes yet both of our children have chc eyes and so does our grandson.
Chloe's are grey/blue/green and
Roxanne
's are blue/green/brown. Roxanne's son
Alfie
's are grey/blue. My sister and my brother also have these multi toned eyes. We have never seen them as unusual as we all have them!
If it were hereditary I'd have expected the colours to have been similar for all of us, but from the attached photo's you'll see we are all very different.
Both girls had blue eyes as children, mine were green, Alfie's were brilliant blue until the last few months.
Feel free to use my pictures.
Keep up the good work!
